Q: Where do you get your ideas?
A: From everywhere I go. From everything I see and hear. From sights and sounds and misunderstood commentary. When I walk on the beach, I invent stories about the people who pass by and the few words of conversations that I catch before they disappear behind me. Sometimes they, or some variation on their imagined story, become the background for a character who appears in a book.
Q: How did you get started writing novels?
A: I’ve always written stories, since before I knew which direction the loop faces on the letter d…hence my earliest work devoted to “my bog.” I didn’t have a dog until much later and still am struggling to get along without a bog. The greatest motivation to take my writing seriously came from a prolonged encounter with a group of wonderful writers creating a dynamic, interactive, and collaborative version of a role-playing game.
Q: Is it okay to create role-playing games, LARPS, or MUDS on your Sea Haven Mysteries series?
A: No. For legal and copyright reasons, I do not grant permission for the worlds and/or characters that I have created to be used in role-playing games, LARPS, or MUDS.
Q: Do you allow fan fiction?
A: Because of the same legal and copyright issues, I do not give permission for fan fiction based on the characters or concepts that I’ve created.
